Today I was put in a group for my Introduction to Digital Media project. Our group project title is, "Cultural Remix and Derivative works". I am in a group with Chris and Emma. and based on our first meeting, I think we will have a great project. Both Emma and Chris have a lot of great skills that will be of benefit while working on this project and I hope to learn something from them.
When assigned to our topic "Cultural Remix and Derivative Works", we were given some areas and examples of what we could do. LawInsider.com defines Derivative Works as " a work that is created based on one or more pre-existing works, such as translations, adaptations, arrangements or other alterations of an artistic or literary work." An Example of this that we will be including in our project is Music Sampling.
Wikipedia defines Music Sampling as "the reuse of a portion of a sound recording in another recording. Samples may comprise elements such as rhythm, melody, speech, sounds, or entire bars of music, and may be layered, equalized, sped up or slowed down, repitched, looped, or otherwise manipulated." As Music consumers this is something the three of us were able to identify with some of our favorite musicians. In our project we have planned to discuss the Pros and Cons to Derivative works in the music industry.
When discussing Cultural Remix, we came up with a simple definition of changing something from one or more cultures into something else, following the examples we were given, we decided to include memes in our project.
The Oxford dictionary defines Meme as "an image, a video, a piece of text, etc. that is passed very quickly from one internet user to another, often with slight changes that make it humorous"
In our project we decided to include the use of memes in the media, the origin story vs the meme story and the general pros and cons to memes.
In the first meeting we also discussed how we could produce our video and what type of video to make. We have lots of ideas that all seem promising. We divided up some work and set a date for our next meeting, where we will discuss further plans and research.
I Think this project is very interesting and I am excited to see how it turns out.
